Winter Storm Grayson has claimed at least one life in Clarendon County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
A woman riding as a passenger in a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer died Thursday morning as a result of a wreck that happened due to ice on Interstate 95.
Lance Cpl. David Jones said the Trailblazer's driver, James Hutchings of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was driving northbound when the vehicle hit a patch of ice at the 105 mile-marker about 10:10 a.m..
"(The vehicle) spun out of control and then into the left shoulder into the median and struck several trees," said Jones. "The front seat passenger was transported to a local hospital from the scene and succumbed to (her) injuries there."
Jones said both Hutchings and the victim were wearing seat belts.
Deputy Coroner Bucky Mock said the woman's name is being withheld as "she has a large family and most have not been notified yet."
