Recently reelected to lead the City of Manning, Mayor Julia Nelson expressed gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility as she embarks on another term after running unopposed.

“All elected positions belong to the people,” Nelson remarked in a recent interview. “These positions don’t belong to any of us, and I never forget that this is a privilege. I’m both elated and grateful that the citizens of Manning have once again entrusted me to represent them as mayor.”

Born and raised in Manning, Nelson finds special significance in serving her hometown. “There’s just something special coupled with a deep sense of pride that goes with being ‘Homegrown’ and working among people who have the same desires for their ‘Hometown’” she shared, emphasizing her commitment to upholding the city’s motto: Matchless for Beauty and Hospitality.

Despite the demands of her role, Nelson balances her duties with a full-time job, acknowledging the challenges but underscoring their necessity. “I remain motivated because I’m completely devoted to leaving the City of Manning better than I found it,” she explained. "There’s no secret of how much I love my hometown and its people.”

Reflecting on her inspirations, the mayor credited her late mother, Edna Mae Taylor Nelson, as her role model, while finding daily motivation in her son, Nelson.

In the face of uncertainties, her greatest fear lies in unforeseen circumstances that could harm citizens or the city’s reputation. “We are susceptible to natural disasters and unfortunately, to those circumstances created by the ill-intent of individuals,” Nelson lamented.

However, Nelson exudes confidence in her team and the city’s financial stability, emphasizing transparency and accountability in all operations since her initial election in 2011. “I have a great team with the City of Manning. In government and any organization, no one individual can be successful without a good team. Team Manning is successful due to the professionalism, oversight, cooperation, and the dedication of our staff, especially in how they perform their duties,” she emphasized.

Yet, criticism remains an inevitable aspect of her role. Nelson approaches it with self-reflection and a commitment to addressing valid concerns while clarifying misconceptions.

Looking beyond Manning, Nelson aims to foster collaboration with neighboring mayors in Clarendon County, emphasizing a longstanding policy to work with any elected official to achieve common goals.

As she envisions the next four years, Nelson prioritizes sustaining current operations while planning for the future. Essential projects include flood mitigation, sewer line replacements, and the development of the Town Park Centre on Church Street.

With an unwavering dedication to her hometown and its people, Mayor Julia Nelson remains steadfast in her commitment to leading Manning towards a prosperous future.
