DOT officials: Ribbon cutting won't mean opening of U.S. 301

A spokesman with the state Department of Transportation said Wednesday that a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held Thursday for the reopening of the U.S. 301 section damaged by the 1,000-year flood in October 2015 will not technically reopen the road to the public. In a clarifying statement, DOT said the road could open as early as Friday - the day after the ceremony - but such an opening to the public could also be delayed by other factors. "The ceremony means we're getting really close to opening," said Scott McElveen. "That day was chosen for the ceremony because it fit everyone's schedule." Spokesman Pete Poor said the highway has some further weather issues to deal with.
