A 21-year-old Manning man will spend more than three decades with the state Department of Corrections after a judge sentenced him to two serious sentences on Friday afternoon in Clarendon County General Sessions court.

A jury found Jonathan Cody Newman of 6051 S. Brewington Road in Manning, guilty Friday of one count of murder and one count of first-degree burglary in relation to a May 2013 home invasion that led to the death of Anthony Ronald Wimberly.

Third Circuit Judge W. Jeffery Young sentenced Newman to 35 years for murder and 30 for first-degree burglary. Those sentences are to be served concurrently, according to Young. Newman was represented by attorney Eleazer Carter.

According to the Manning Police Department, Newman and two other men - Montag Lamall Webb, 23, of 1180 Lockwood Circle in Alcolu and Letroy Samuels, 33, of 720 W. Huggins St. in Manning - were charged with murder and first-degree burglary in August 2013, three months after the men reportedly robbed Wimberly at his home in the 200 block of South Church Street. Police found Wimberly lying on the floor, and barely breathing. His face and head were bloody. He was transported to Palmetto Richland in Columbia from Clarendon Memorial Hospital and later died.

Represented by Public Defender King Cutter, Webb pleaded guilty Monday to the lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and second-degree burglary, receiving two concurrent eight-year sentences. Assistant Solicitor Chris DuRant called Webb during this week's trial to testify against Newman.

Samuels was found not guilty on all charges. He was represented by attorney Harry DeVoe.
