A woman has been charged in connection to the January 27 crash that killed Summerton Mayor Tony Junious. Master Trooper William Bennett of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Tuesday that 33-year-old Toni Singleton of Summerton is charged with felony DUI. Singleton was denied bond during a hearing held on February 2. The crash happened when a 2010 Chevrolet Impala heading west on Governor Richardson Road and a 2013 Dodge Charger heading north on Liberty Hill Road collided. Junious, the driver and only occupant of the Chevrolet sedan, was taken to McLeod Health Clarendon for treatment but died. Singleton, the driver of the Dodge Charger, was also injured and taken to McLeod Health Clarendon. Singleton had been in the hospital since the crash. Last Saturday, she was released from the hospital,
charged, and then booked at the Clarendon County Jail. Junious, 48, made history in 2022 as the first black mayor of Summerton and previously served on the
Clarendon County School Board. He has been remembered fondly since the wreck for his lasting impression on the town and community at large. His funeral at Scott’s Branch High School was attended by hundreds of family, friends, and residents from Clarendon County. Trooper Bennett said the crash is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
