Duke Energy awards $15,000 to United Way of Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee counties

Duke Energy Foundation recently awarded $15,000 to the United Way of Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee Counties for critical home improvements for seniors in Clarendon County. Duke Energy’s Senior Home Repair Program provided 15 qualifying nonprofits grants of up to $20,000 through a request for proposals announced in September.

“South Carolina’s senior population should never have to decide between basic necessities and living out their lives in safety in their own home,” said Mike Callahan,

Duke Energy’s South Carolina state president. “A simple home repair or safety improvement can be the big difference.”

“I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact the United Way’s ramp installation program has made on families in Clarendon County, giving those who could not safely leave their homes the gift of mobility. I’m proud to present them with this gift that will assist with their existing senior home repair program,” said Quinetta Buterbaugh, Duke Energy government and community relations manager.

“This grant could not come at a better time as we help as many seniors as possible in Clarendon County on our waiting list. The need is always there, and the list never stops growing. What a blessing it is for families to feel safe in their own homes or for senior citizens to be able to leave their homes safely to make doctor’s appointments in-person by way of a new wheelchair ramp.
