The South Carolina State Election Commission has clarified who is eligible to vote in the Aug. 11 Special Republican Primary to fill the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat.
According to the commission, voters who cast ballots in the June Republican Primary are eligible to vote in the Aug. 11 primary. Voters who did not participate in either party's June primary also may vote.
However, voters who participated in the June Democratic Primary are not eligible to vote in the Aug. 11 Special Republican Primary.
The SEC said its determination is based on South Carolina election laws governing participation in political party primaries.
The commission also addressed questions about candidates appearing on the general election ballot for more than one office. The SEC said state law prohibits a candidate from appearing multiple times on the ballot for the same office as the nominee of different political parties — a practice known as "fusion voting" — but does not prohibit a candidate from appearing on the general election ballot for more than one office, noting that it has occurred in previous South Carolina elections.
