Voters head to polls Tuesday for U.S. Senate special Republican primary

Clarendon County voters will head to the polls Tuesday for the U.S. Senate special Republican primary.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. will be permitted to vote.

Not every registered voter is eligible to participate in the special primary. Voters who cast a ballot in the June Democratic primary cannot vote Tuesday. Those who voted in the June Republican primary or did not participate in either party’s June primary are eligible.

Clarendon County recorded 415 early votes, including 130 on Aug. 6, 131 on Aug. 7 and 154 on Aug. 8.

Statewide, more than 61,000 voters cast ballots during early voting, according to the South Carolina Election Commission. The commission reported 19,906 ballots cast Friday alone.

Election officials are encouraging voters to verify their polling locations before leaving home because some locations may have changed for the August election. Voters can find their polling place and view a sample ballot at scVOTES.gov or contact the Clarendon County voter registration office.

Voters must present a current and valid photo ID at the polls. Acceptable forms include a South Carolina driver’s license, an identification card issued by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, a South Carolina voter registration card with a photo, a federal military ID or a U.S. passport.

Absentee ballots must be received by the county voter registration office no later than 7 p.m. Tuesday to be counted.

The voter’s oath on an absentee ballot return envelope must be signed, and the envelope must be witnessed by someone who is at least 18 years old and provides an address.

Because of the approaching deadline, the commission recommends personally returning absentee ballots to the county voter registration office. A voter may also designate someone who has completed an authorized returnee form to deliver the ballot. Photo identification is required when returning an absentee ballot in person.

Voters can check the status of an absentee ballot and find additional election information at scVOTES.gov.
