The South Carolina Department of Transportation will temporarily close a lane of northbound Interstate 95 near Lake Marion beginning Tuesday evening as work continues on the Lake Marion Bridge Replacement Project.
The lane closure will be in place between mile markers 100 and 102 from 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, until 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, according to SCDOT.
During the closure, traffic will be shifted into a temporary alignment while crews install temporary concrete barrier walls along the shoulders. The work will provide access for construction of the new roadway alignment and new bridge.
The work is part of the nearly $500 million project to replace the aging I-95 bridges over Lake Marion between Clarendon and Orangeburg counties. State and federal officials broke ground on the project in April, formally launching construction on the new crossing.
The existing bridges date to the late 1960s and carry roughly 40,000 vehicles each day. The corridor is a major East Coast freight route and also serves as a critical hurricane evacuation route.
Traffic is expected to continue using the existing bridges throughout construction, although temporary lane closures were anticipated as work progressed. The project is currently expected to be completed by summer 2030.
SCDOT encouraged motorists traveling through the area during the closure to slow down and watch for crews in the work zone. Drivers can also use the 511SC app for updated traffic information.
