Rena Harris has organized a shoe drive in Manning after noticing a need for shoes in the community. The shoes collected are given a second chance with those in need.
Harris describes what inspired her by saying, "It was my birthday. I had some money so I went to the mall. I found buy one, get 1/2 off the other pair of tennis shoes. I took the bus back to town and sat waiting on the bench for my bus to go home. A young lady walked over to the bench and asked if I was waiting for the bus. I proceeded to tell her yes, and asked her how she was doing. I guess you know where I am going. She began weeping and sharing where she was with her life. Looking down at her feet I noticed her tennis shoes were wrapped in tape. I then asked her what size shoe she wore. Immediately I handed her the bag and told her to take a pair, with a pair of footies too. Weeping harder, she started dancing around saying that no one has ever just given her something.. I never saw her again. I say this: She had shoes that were complete in their journey. What shoes do you have, children or adults that still have more walking left to do...that you can give?"
