Last November, Officer David Woods (pictured below) who has been with the City of Manning Police Department for two years, got approval from Chief Grice for the officers to participate in ‘No Shave November.’
No Shave November is a month long journey during which participants forgo shaving and grooming in order to evoke conversation and raise awareness for cancer or other community problems.
In the case of the City of Manning Police Department, the participating officers gave a donation in order to not shave their facial hair during the month of November. Several officers like wearing a beard and the donations were growing. After November ended, Chief Grice put into policy that officers are allowed to have facial hair if they follow the neatness guidelines. The officers who wanted to continue with the donations could do so.
Since the donation period began, the officers that wanted to continue to have facial hair continued to donate, and the funds raised have been used in the community in a variety of ways.
Office Woods was able to sponsor four families for Christmas this year.
Chief of Manning Police Department Keith Grice said, “It is a great feeling to see the expression of joy on everyone’s faces.”
