Flash Flood Warning and Flood Watch issued for Clarendon County

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia has issued a Flash Flood Warning and Flood Watch for Clarendon County due to heavy rainfall.

Flash Flood Warning

  • Effective: Tuesday 7:13 AM until 12:15 PM EDT
  • Affected Areas: East Central Burke County, Bamberg County, Barnwell County, Southeastern Calhoun County, Southwestern Clarendon County, and Orangeburg County.
  • Details: Heavy rain has been detected by Doppler radar, with 1 to 3 inches already fallen and an additional 2 to 4 inches possible. Flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
  • Hazard: Flash flooding caused by heavy rain.
  • Source: Radar indicated.
  • Impact: Flash flooding is expected in small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, and other poor drainage and low-lying areas.
  • Precautionary Actions: Most flooding deaths occur in vehicles. Never drive through flooded roadways or around barricades. Turn around, don’t drown.

Locations Expected to Experience Flooding:

  • Orangeburg, Barnwell, Bamberg, Denmark, Brookdale, Blackville, Holly Hill, Branchville, Bowman, Elloree, Orangeburg County Airport, Edisto Gardens, South Carolina State University, Claflin College, Rivers Bridge State Park, Barnwell State Park, Santee State Park, Santee, Ehrhardt, and Hilda.
  • Highways Affected: Interstate 95 between mile markers 85 and 105, and Interstate 26 between mile markers 145 and 169.

Flood Watch

  • Effective: Until Thursday 8:00 PM EDT
  • Affected Areas: Portions of east central Georgia (Burke, Columbia, McDuffie, Richmond) and central South Carolina (Aiken, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Central Orangeburg, Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Northwestern Orangeburg, Richland, Southeastern Orangeburg, and Sumter).
  • Details: Excessive rainfall from Tropical Storm Debby will continue to impact the region, with 5 to 10 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts along and south of I-20.
  • Impacts: Potential flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers are possible.
  • Precautionary Actions: Monitor forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those in flood-prone areas should be prepared to take action if flooding develops.
