UPDATE: Single-vehicle collision on I-95 claims life of North Charleston man

A single-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 in Clarendon County claimed the life of a North Charleston man Thursday afternoon, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash occurred around 4:40 p.m. near the 104-mile marker on I-95 southbound, approximately four miles south of Summerton, S.C. The vehicle involved was a Dodge pickup, and the driver, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as Vegas Poinsette, 51, of North Charleston. Authorities have confirmed that next of kin has been notified. An autopsy has been scheduled for early next week.

According to the initial investigation, the Dodge pickup was traveling southbound when it veered off the left side of the roadway. The driver then lost control of the vehicle, which overturned, went off the right side of the road, and struck a tree.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
