CCTC Massage Therapy program hosts national seminar

Posted
SUMTER – Central Carolina Technical College hosted an educators’ seminar for about 50 attendees from massage therapy colleges/programs from across the nation on Friday at CCTC’s Health Sciences Center in Sumter. The focus of all-day event, which was called “Hospital-Based Massage Therapy Educator Seminar,” was on presenting professional standards and requirements for hospital-based massage training. CCTC is one of less than a dozen schools nationwide that are active in hospitals. It also has more medical clinical sites and inpatient floors than any other massage school in the nation, and is only one of two massage programs nationwide incorporating simulation and advanced role-play learning activities into the program to meet learning and performance outcomes.

CCTC Massage Therapy Program Manager Brent Jackson shared curriculum design strategies, basics for simulation training and information for massage educators interested in hospital-based massage therapy. There were presentations from CCTC 2013 graduate and instructor Jessica Ferguson, the Massage Therapy Foundation and the American Massage Therapy Association. The seminar also covered the best textbooks currently available, basic learning outcomes (ensuring HIPAA, Universal precautions, professional communications), an observation simulation run with students while educators watched and a question-and-answer panel featuring local hospital affiliations – including representatives from McLeod Healthcare System, Tuomey Healthcare System, Clarendon Healthcare System and NHC (a division of National Healthcare). Participants earned 8CE hours of approved National Level continuing education.
