Curtis Johnson of East Clarendon Middle/High School was named 1A Athletic Director of the Year. Recently, the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association announced the recipients of its 2023-2024 awards. Clarendon County School District is pleased to have an award recipient this year.

“It is an honor to have one of our own awarded this year,” stated Reggie Kennedy, District Athletic Director. “Coach Johnson works hard to ensure that every coach and athlete has what they need to succeed and assist in healthy sports participation. The main aspect is that he ensures that all athletes understand that being a student comes before being an athlete, as academic success is always at the forefront.”

The awards recognize individuals for their commitment and contributions to education-based interscholastic athletics.

“This is truly an honor,” stated Curtis Johnson, ECMHS Athletic Director. “We have some good ADs in our region and we are all committed to our purpose. I have learned what it takes to be a good AD and that is communication, organization, flexibility, and the openness to be a continual learner. Our students are at the forefront of all that I do and I want to ensure that they are not only successful on the field but also in the classroom, and that takes ensuring that the coaches we have are qualified in all aspects of their jobs.”

The award winners will be celebrated during the SCAAA Spring Conference 2024 on Wednesday morning, March 13, 2024, at 8:00 am at the Charleston Marriott -- 170 Lockwood Drive, Charleston, SC.
