Compass Restaurant owner, Ronald Clifton Cantey, 57, of Lake City, was arrested Monday evening and charged with arson in connection with the July 26, 2016 fire that destroyed the business. Cantey reportedly collected around $700,000 in fraudulent insurance claims in the incident. He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office on Monday by Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Randy Stewart and Deputy Peyton Way.

The owner of a popular restaurant outside of Turbeville that went up in flames last summer has been charged with setting fire to the long-running establishment.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office charged Ronald Clifton Cantey, co-owner of the Compass Restaurant, with arson for the July 26, 2016, fire.
A news release from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office states that the 57-year-old Cantey allegedly collected about $700,000 in fraudulent insurance claims after the blaze, which started about 10:45 p.m. July 26, 2016, and stopped traffic on U.S. 378 in both directions for several hours as firefighters fought the blaze.
Built in 1975, the restaurant was sold to Cantey about six years ago by the Green family.
The State Law Enforcement Division assisted with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office investigation.

Seriously?! Can anyone edit this article?? Picture caption mentions accused with two different last names “Gainey” and “Canter”. Then article mentions him as “Cantey”.

Very bad reporting and even worse editing.

Wow! I had a feeling this was going to be the reason the fire started. I worked at this restaurant for a couple of years back in high school. I feel so bad for the many people from the community that depended on the business for a job. The workers in the back of the house especially were loving, dedicated, hard workers who had been there for years and years. I will always miss eating there it was a family tradition to go there for crab legs since I was a little girl. It was awesome to have a full seafood buffet 10 minutes from my home too.. REST IN PEACE Compass <3

Not only has he had previous arson arrests, but he also was convicted of food stamp fraud some years ago. He is a drunken snob who thought he and his wife were better than others. I guess their days of thinking they were above the law are over. Can’t help but wonder why his wife wasn’t also charged. She had to know he wasn’t home “resting from surgery” as they reported to the police and I’m certain she enjoyed the $700k of insurance payout. I think Karma will always win especially w hen you treat people like he did. I hope his new accommodations are just as nice and homey as his rental properties are. Then he can feel the other side of being a Scum, err Slum Lord.

I am shocked he’s finally been caught? He’s been doing this for yrs. burning down his own stores, insurance fraud,
And as Clarendon Citizen pointed out slumlord, I know first hand my wife used to work at 1 of his stores, She quit because he wanted her to sell beer cig. on food stamps or EBT and ring up as food, But he will probably get away with this too?
Hope he get’s 20yrs get this creep in jail where he belongs! Should have kept him in longer the first time.
His brother Scott on the other hand is a good man,
