LAKE CITY - A 17-year-old Lake City man was arrested Monday for his alleged role in the head-on collision that killed two people on Nov. 24, 2014, on Morris Street outside of Lake City. Joshua Lloyd of The Florence Morning News reports that John Samuel Cox III of 149 Springs Road in Lake City was charged with two counts of reckless homicide caused by injury of a motor vehicle. S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins announced the charges Monday, saying an investigation showed Cox was the at-fault driver when the wreck occurred. According to reports, Cox swerved left of center, hitting Delphia Redden, 53, of Cades head-on. Staley E. McElveen, 19, of Puddin Swamp Road in Turbeville, was a passenger in Cox's vehicle. Both Redden and McElveen perished in the wreck. Born in Florence County, McElveen was the son of Lloyd Oriane McElveen Jr. and Deanna Michelle Thomas McElveen. He was a 2014 graduate of East Clarendon High School. A Florence County magistrate judge granted a $20,000 surety bond for Cox on Tuesday, with terms of the bond including no contact with the victims' families directly or indirectly through social media or a third party; a daily 8 p.m. curfew; and his being released into the custody of his mother and not being allowed to leave the state.
