The state Attorney General's Office began its case Monday against a 67-year-old Olanta man on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor; one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor; and three counts of committing or attempting a lewd act upon a child younger than 16. Melvin Mack McElveen of 4161 Turbeville Highway in Olanta was arrested June 18, 2013, on warrants from the State Law Enforcement Division that alleged the suspect engaged "in a sexual battery with a minor younger than 11 between May 1, 2010, and July 3, 2012," and another minor "between the ages of 13 and 16 between May 1, 2011, and Nov. 27, 2012, at his home." The investigation was initiated by the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office based on statements made by family members of the victims. The warrants accused McElveen of touching the victims' uncovered private parts, along with rubbing their bodies and breasts. McElveen faces up to life in prison for the first-degree CSC charges, and 15 years each for the other charges. Fifth Circuit Judge Robert E. Hood is presiding over McElveen's case.
