1849 – Geneva Medical College of Geneva, N.Y., awards Elizabeth Blackwell an M.D., making her the first female American doctor. 1937 – In Moscow, 17 leading Communists go on trial, accused of participating in a plot led by Leon Trotksy to overthrow Premier Joseph Stalin’s regime and assassinate its leaders in the first of the Moscow Show Trials. 1950 – The Knesset passes a resolution, identifying Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. 1957 – Wham-O toy company buys the rights for the Frisbee from Walter Frederick Morrison, who simply calls it the “flying disc” at the time.
