Posted

The City of Manning Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 10th, at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers, presided over by Mayor Julia A. Nelson. The meeting included a public hearing, resolutions, and the announcement of September as Hunger Action Month.

Hunger Action Month proclamation

Mayor Julia Nelson proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month in Manning, in collaboration with Harvest Hope Food Bank. The proclamation encourages residents to volunteer, donate, and raise awareness about hunger throughout the month.

“Hunger is a pervasive issue in our community, affecting individuals and families of all backgrounds,” Mayor Nelson said during the presentation. “By joining together as a community, we can make a significant impact and ensure that everyone has access to the food they need to thrive.”

Erinn Rowe, CEO of Harvest Hope Food Bank, echoed these sentiments, urging the community to take action, noting that “Every action, no matter how small, can make a difference in the fight against hunger.”

The proclamation is part of a month-long campaign, with residents encouraged to volunteer at local food pantries, host food drives, and use social media to spread awareness using hashtags #HungerActionMonth and #HarvestHopeFoodBank.

Zoning amendment and public hearing

A public hearing was held on a proposed amendment to rezone property located at 205 South Boundary St., owned by Donald Ard. The request was to change the zoning from Office Commercial (OC) to General Commercial (GC). The amendment, Zoning Ordinance No. 2024-02M, passed its first reading during the meeting, with the Planning Commission having previously recommended approval. This change will allow for expanded commercial use of the property.

Surplus property resolution

Council also passed a resolution declaring several city vehicles and equipment as surplus property, authorizing their sale. The items deemed obsolete included four police vehicles, ranging from a 2010 Ford Mustang to a 2017 Ford Explorer, as well as a backup generator and cocktail tables. The resolution, in accordance with S.C. Code Ann. §5-7-40, allows the City Administrator to manage the sale of the surplus items to the public.

Reports and business

Additional reports were presented, including the Finance Director’s report and departmental updates included in the council packet. Councilmembers also had the opportunity to comment on ongoing city matters before entering an executive session.

No actions were reported following the executive session.

The next regular meeting of the City of Manning Council is scheduled for October 8, 2024.
