Margret Walker’s fourth blood drive for the American Red Cross will take place on December 26th at Historic Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. The church will host the bloodmobile for the fourth year in a row. The blood drive will take place at 105 Dinkins Street Manning, SC 29102 from 1pm to 6pm.
Walker got the idea for this project when she decided to hold a blood drive to celebrate her 60th birthday. This has been an annual blood drive Margaret Walker hosts at her church throughout the year.
“I am a recently retired nurse, and there is always a need for blood,” Walker explained when asked what motivates her to organize these blood drives. “Since the COVID 19 pandemic the need for blood has escalated.”
Walker began her journey with the American Red Cross on her 60th birthday; she is now 67 years old and has hosted three blood drives, making the event on the 26th her fourth.
When Walker had this idea, she contacted the American Red Cross , who were thrilled and thought how unique it was that Wacker was doing the blood drive instead of having a birthday party.
Following the success of the first blood drive, Rev. George P Windley, Sr proposed holding another blood drive, which they did and it was also a huge success. The last blood drive held by walker ather church was in September of 2021 in honor of Michella Hammett.
Prior to COVID, 19 church members hosted a lunch/dinner for those donating blood. This was for those who needed something to eat and drink while giving blood. Unfortunately, due to COVID 19, this will not be done at the fourth blood drive this year.
There are currently 23 people giving blood. Walker would love to collect thirty liters of blood at this blood drive.
“I want to point out that if the time they want is not available, still come! Sometimes people register and can’t give blood because they have fever or because they are anemic,” said Walker. Anyone interested in donating blood should register at www.redcrossblood.org
The center for sponsor code is EbenezerManning. All donors will receive a free long sleeve T-Shirt and a $20 amazon gift card by registering with a valid email address.
