Town of Summerton to hold special election

The Town of Summerton will hold a special election on Tuesday, April 2, to fill the mayor’s seat after the death of Tony Junious. The town has named council member Darion Canty as mayor pro tempore to fill the vacancy until then.


For persons interested in running for mayor of the Town of Summerton, filing opened at noon Friday, Feb. 2, and closes at noon Feb. 16. Candidates can file at Clarendon County Voter Registration Office. The filing fee of $100 should be made payable to Clarendon County. Candidates are required to file a Statement of Economic Interest and Campaign Disclosure online with the State Ethics Commission. Failure to file these documents will not disqualify a candidate from the election, but may result in a fine.


To vote in this election, residents must be registered no later than March 3. Voter registration application sent via mail will be accepted if postmarked by March 4. Voters can check their voter registration information and find where they can vote at  scvotes.org . The polling location is also listed on a voter's registration card. Early voting for the election will begin on March 18 and ends March 29. The Clarendon County Voter Registration and Elections at 3 S. Church St. in Manning will be open for the early voting period from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. On April 2, Election Day, there will be three polling places open for voters. For Summerton 1, the polling place will be Summerton Fire Station at 6 N. Canty St. Summerton 2's polling place will be at Summerton Cultural Arts Center on 12 S. Church St., and Summerton 3's polling place will be Clarendon 1 Resource Center Gym at 1154 41st St.
