The Aftermath: Church contractors working on homes of disabled, elderly

This picture by Manning Mayor Julia Nelson shows Calvary Chapel Church of Lexington Pastor Oakley Dickson and Jason Corley placing a tarp on a Manning home Tuesday to cover the damaged roof in preparation for more rain. Several roofs were damaged by torrential rains earlier this month. Nelson has posted for the need for items to help repair homes of Manning's elderly and disabled and families who are without insurance. Nelson called on residents earlier this month to donate to help those residents impacted by floods. “We would like to ask for the following items to be donated: sheet rock, sheetrock mud and tape, shingles, plywood, paint (white and off-white), drop cloths, 1-by-6 and 2-by-4 boards, shingle nails, tin penny nails, 16 penny nails, painters corking, etc.,” Nelson said. “These materials will be stored in a warehouse at the City of Manning’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.” Nelson said the items will be used by “legitimate groups that have contacted (her) interested in trying to help repair a few homes.”

She said Calvary Chapel Church is one such entity that has contractors and construction workers that will come and help repair homes. She said five houses have been identified for work. "We will go as far as donations will allow," she said. "I'm hoping when they come back to our area to begin repairs, we will have local volunteers to assist." “Please keep in mind that this is tedious work, which will be done by volunteers," Nelson added. "If you have expertise that could assist us in the upcoming weeks, please consider giving some of your time.”
