TOWN OF SUMMERTON STREET PAINTING PROJECT
Kids and adults have fun adding color to downtown intersection
Saturday, October 27, 2018, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
The Town of Summerton 4 MAIN, in collaboration with South Carolina State University Art Department, invites the residents of Summerton and greater Clarendon County to come downtown and help paint the street! This community public arts project is open to all ages and abilities, and you don’t have to be a professional artist or know how to paint either. Just get together with friends and family and come help transform one of Summerton’s downtown intersections into an eye-catching, colorful, one-of-a-kind pedestrian walkway.
Students, professional artists and non-artists are invited to help paint semi-permanent street murals on the pedestrian walkways at and near the intersection of Main Street and South Church Street. Two of these original art works come from Greenwood, SC, artist Amy Alley. All art works submitted online were juried by the Summerton Town Council and will be on exhibit in 4 MAIN.
South Carolina State University Art Department students, under the supervision of artist and teacher Angeletti Giordano MFA, will be available to assist volunteers with priming, prepping and painting taped-off sections of the pedestrian walkways.
This public arts event will also feature Music on the Boulevard by recording artist hughes sumerel from Greenville and classical guitarist Matthew Smith who teaches guitar lesson and classes at Newberry College and operates Matthew Smith’s Guitar Studio in Columbia. There will also be local art vendors, sidewalk painting, rock painting and FREE snacks and refreshments.
Visitors and volunteers are also welcome to visit Summerton’s 4 MAIN indoor, wood-engineered Pop-up Theatre, designed and constructed by Clemson University Architecture and Community Build students in April 2017. Model pirate ships along with fishing and wooden boats art and photography is the current exhibition.
The Summerton Street Painting Project is made possible by financial donations and support from Short Trip Gas Station - Convenience Stores, Summerton Lions Club, Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce, First Citizens Bank, Morris Animal Clinic, Thomas L. Harvin, Ray’s Tractors LLC, Clarendon Auto Parts, Dixie Auto Parts, John C. Land III, Rodney Morrow and the South Carolina Arts Commission.
While we hope the forecast will be perfect for our event, in case of inclement weather conditions, this event will be rescheduled for Saturday, November 3, 2018.
