Paxville’s upcoming municipal election will be decided entirely by write-in votes after no candidates filed for any of the three offices up for election.
The town is scheduled to elect a mayor and two Town Council members on Dec. 1. The candidate filing period opened Sept. 17 and closed Sept. 28, but no one filed for any of the three seats.
Clarendon County Voter Registration and Elections officials initially explored whether the filing period could be reopened after it closed without any candidates. The South Carolina Election Commission has since confirmed to the county office that filing will not reopen and the election will instead move forward as a write-in election.
That means voters will not have candidates listed for the three offices and will instead write in the names of their choices for mayor and the two council seats.
The election remains scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1. Residents must be registered to vote by Nov. 1, while voter registration forms submitted by mail will be accepted if postmarked by Nov. 2.
Early voting will begin Nov. 16 and continue through Nov. 25 at the Clarendon County Voter Registration and Elections Office, 3 S. Church St. in Manning. The early voting center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays and weekends.
On Election Day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Paxville voters will cast ballots at the Paxville Fire Station, 2151 Conyers Road.
The Clarendon County Board of Canvassers will meet Dec. 3 to determine the validity of provisional ballots cast in the election.
