Greeleyville honors fallen soldiers

Posted

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on Jun. 14 and it commemorates the adoption of the American Flag on the same date in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

In Greeleyville, Flag Day is celebrated on the last weekend of May at the annual Flag Day Festival. Since 1982, the small town has hosted the celebration. The celebration features bingo and other fun games, street dances, barbeque, vendors, live entertainment, fireworks, and more. This year, Greeleyville was set to hold its 40th Flag Day Festival before inclement weather struck the area. Still, that Saturday, May 27, a monument was unveiled in front of Town Hall in honor of Fallen Soldiers. The unveiling of the memorial was dedicated to serving military and veterans.

The Flag Day Festival was initially co-founded by the late Leonard Jonte, former CEO, and president of the Bank of Greeleyville. Jonte devoted much of his time to preserving and bettering the town, and he also served on the Greeleyville Beautification Committee. Around 2 or 3 years ago, the Town of Greeleyville took over the festival. The Flag Day celebration brings people together each year, and people from different backgrounds are able to share in the festivities.

The Flag Day tradition in Greeleyville is one that characterizes Clarendon County. The festival offers a chance for people to collaborate for a cause that means so much to many people. We look forward to the Greeleyville Flag Day Festival next year!
