SUMMERTON — Ella Canty Carter, 90, widow of Arthur Carter, died on June 25, 2014, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born Nov. 6, 1923, in Clarendon County, "Monkey," as she was affectionately known, was a daughter of the late Susan Canty Hardy and Stanley Adams. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She worked as a caregiver and domestic worker for many years until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by two sons, William and Eddie Lee Carter.

Survivors include 10 children, Earl Carter of Pompano Beach, Fla., Rosa (Willie) Smith of Manning, Susan Holiday of Sumter, Ella (Carl) Harrison and Charlie (Audrey) Carter, both of Bronx, N.Y., Francis Fludd and James (Sheila) Carter, both of Summerton, Kaybertha (William) Webber of Thomasville, N.C., Hattie Fordham of New York, N.Y.; and Michale (Tyra) Carter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 33 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty McNair and Clara (Ken) Hepburn; a brother, James Lee (Judy) Hardy; a goddaughter, Ida Postell; and two special healthcare workers, Julia Richburg and Viola Riley.

Funeral services for Ella Canty Carter were held Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Friendship AME Church with the Rev. Albert Thompson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
