Jerry Wayne Ham, a cherished and respected member of the Summerton community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the age of 82 in the loving presence of his family at his son’s home in Chapin, SC. Jerry, a friendly, gentle, and intelligent man, was known for his warm smile and kind heart that endeared him to all who knew him. He had a strong work ethic, no doubt supported by the passion he had for his craft and for conversing with people in the community.
Born on January 17, 1942, in Florence, SC, Jerry was the son of the late Otis Cleo Ham and Clydia Haynes Ham. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran while embarking on a lifelong career as a barber. Jerry began his craft at Ham’s Barber Shop in downtown Florence, working alongside his father. The barber shop, later relocated to the Florence Mall, was a beloved fixture in the community, with Jerry eventually helming as the owner and operator. He also opened Jerry’s Barber Shop in Summerton, for a time managing both operations before eventually running the Summerton location exclusively.
For fun, Jerry has always been a fisherman, living on the water his entire life. He also would typically have a new brain teaser, logic question, or riddle, whether for family, friends, or his customers. He was a talented piano player. As a child he even played ukelele and sang on the radio. His dedication to his work and his clients was evident in every haircut and conversation shared in his chair.
Jerry spent years of service at the Lions Club in the local Summerton chapter and spent his Sundays at Lake Marion Baptist Church, where he consistently played the organ and sang during worship.
Jerry’s legacy lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his two sons, Matthew Wayne Ham (Tally) of Charleston and Andrew Todd Ham (Emma) of Chapin. Jerry was a doting grandfather to four grandchildren, Hugh, Ellison, Lane, and Zellie, who will miss his gentle guidance and joyful spirit. He also leaves behind three nieces, Connie, Chris, and Cherie, who will cherish their memories of him.
Jerry was predeceased not only by his parents but also by his brother, Lyde Ham. His passing marks the end of an era, but his memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who loved him.
A funeral service to celebrate Jerry’s life was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Carlisle officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather for a visitation one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11 a.m., at Stephens Funeral Home.
Following the service, a graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. at Florence Memorial Gardens, where Jerry will be laid to rest with the honor and dignity he so richly deserves.
