Saints win first round of playoffs

Clarendon Hall traveled Friday to Winnsboro for the first round of the South Carolina Independent School Association 8-Man Playoffs against Richard Winn Academy. The Saints came away with a win against the Eagles by a close 29-28 final score. After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles got on the scoreboard with a one-yard rushing touchdown and an extra point to go up 7-0. Richard Winn got on the board again after an onside kick with a four-yard pass and an extra point to go up 14-0 at halftime. With a little more than five minutes left in third quarter, Clarendon Hall's Ben Corbett recovered an Eagle fumble at 42 yard line. On the next play, Clarendon Hall's Tyrese Mitchum ran 58 yards for a touchdown for the Saints' first score. Bobby Ashba made good on the two-point converson to make the score 14-8. On the next series of plays, the Saints' Zyan Gilmore picked up an Eagle fumble and raced 40 yards for a touchdown. The Saints added a two-point conversion on a Dylan Way pass to Kade Elliott to take their first lead of the game 16-14. Richard Winn quickly answered back with 35-yard rushing touchdown and a two-point conversion to go up 22-16. With 3 minutes left in the third quarter, Clarendon Hall answered back with the Saints' quarterback Dylan Way connecting to Wells Robinson on a 43-yard pass for a touchdown. Richard Winn got on the board on their first possession in the fourth quarter with 31-yard pass completion and a failed two-point conversion to make the score 28-22. With 2 minutes left in game, Clarendon Hall got its final touchdown on a Tyrese Mitchum 12-yard run. With the score tied 28-28, Clarendon Hall's Jeffrey Warren tacked on the extra point kick for the Saints' lead at 29-28. Clarendon Hall stopped Richard Winn's final attempt with a pass interception by Zyan Gilmore at the 30 yard line. From there, the Saints were able to run the clock down to seal the victory. On offense, Tyrese Mitchum ran for 147 yards on 22 carries. Dylan Way had 47 yards on eight carries and was 2-3 in passing with 46 yards. Ben Corbett led the Saints on defense with 11 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass interception. Zyan Gilmore had a pass interception and a fumble recovery. Dylan Way also totaled 11 tackles. Clarendon Hall will travel Friday to Ehrhardt to take on Andrew Jackson Academy in the second round of the SCISA 8-Man Playoffs.
