Report disaster fraud and abuse to the SC Disaster Recovery Office

Posted
COLUMBIA - The South Carolina Disaster Recovery Office has received reports that individuals are attempting to scam residents to pay for contractor services. The office oversees grant programs focusing on rebuilding or repairing homes damaged by severe weather events, such as the severe storm event in October 2015 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016. With the support and guidance of the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the Disaster Recovery Office manages federal funds available to assist in disaster recovery. The office warned clients who are currently being helped by SCDRO that the organization and its contractors do not charge for their services. The SCDRO housing program concentrates on the repair and/or replacement of homes based on eligibility and priority need. The office focuses on serving the most vulnerable residents, giving priority to those who cannot recover themselves. Those eligible for the program much have disaster-caused damage to their homes as a result of the October 2015 flood or Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. Residents must also own property or live in one of the 24 disaster-declared counties. Eligibility, however, does not guarantee assistance. Factors that determine citizen priority include income level, disability, and age. The office is telling residents being aided by the program that if they are approached by contractors for payment, they should call 1 (844) 506-5436 immediately.
