A 30-year-old New York man charged June 21 with trafficking in heroin during a traffic stop on Interstate 95 will likely be deported to Mexico, according to Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley. Baxley said that John Fredy Vargas Gonzalez was charged after a routine traffic stop June 21 on I-95 in Manning. The suspect allegedly had "under his control more than 1,000 grams of a brown powder substance that is consistent with heroin," according to warrants obtained from the Clarendon County Clerk of Court's Office. Baxley said the substance was tested and was confirmed to be heroin. "After a further check, we found that Gonzalez was wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for failure to appear at a deportation hearing," said Baxley. "He remains detained at the Clarendon County Detention Center." Baxley said that the "kilo of heroin" was found during the stop by the Sheriff's Office's K9 unit. The Manning Times asked about the incident in early July, but waited until ICE could be notified of Gonzalez's arrest to make further arrangements.
