A 23-year-old Manning man was arrested June 7 and charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and third-degree domestic violence. According to reports from the Manning Police Department, DeKwan Octavian Slater of 619 Woodside Drive in Manning is alleged to have struck a 30-year-old woman with a baseball bat and with his closed fist multiple times over the course of the week prior to his arrest. The victim initially called police to have a trespassing notice filed against the suspect, but police noticed bruises and marks on the woman's face and upper arms, along with a busted lip. The woman confirmed that Slater had allegedly struck her at various times, and had also told her in the past that "he would kill her if she tried to leave him," reports state. The woman accompanied police to the Manning Police Department to speak with an investigator; during this time, another woman living at the victim's home called 911 to state that the suspect had returned to the home and was knocking on the door. Police responded to the home and brought the suspect to the department for questioning. After speaking with police for a while, Slater allegedly said he was done talking and denied ever placing his hands on the victim. Slater was transported to the Clarendon County Detention Center, where he was denied bond.
