Fire destroys St. Paul home

A fire that destroyed about 80 percent of a St. Paul area home late Saturday night likely started in the home's kitchen, according to Clarendon County Fire Chief Frances Richbourg. "No one was home at the time, and no one was injured," Richbourg said late Sunday night of the fire, which began about 11 p.m. Saturday. "We were out there for about two or three hours, and the family had a significant loss." Richbourg said that, by the time firefighters arrived, the fire had "taken control of the attic." "We had to pull a lot of the ceiling out to get to it to fight it," said Richbourg. "The structure is still there, but there's so much damage on the inside and to the attic space and downstairs. I doubt there's much there they'd be able to reuse." Richbourg said she was unsure how many people lived in the home. "I believe they had some family in the area they could stay with," she said. She noted that a first responder on scene also notified the Sandhills Chapter of the American Red Cross as to the family's plight.
