Why Barbara Way Relays

Barbara Way was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002.

After chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, she has been cancer free now for nearly 14 years.

"I figured just get them cut off and I don't have to worry about it coming back," said Way of her surgery. "I'd had my children. I wasn't going to breast feed anymore. I just figured it was the best way to deal with it."

Way was one of dozens of survivors who attended Clarendon County Relay for Life Friday at Manning High School's Ramsey Stadium. She said she had attended Relay for Life before her own diagnosis, but she hasn't missed a Relay for Life Event at Manning High School since she battled the disease herself.

"It's a celebration of life," she said. "After I'd gone through everything, it was a reaffirmation. The support from everyone still touches me. It really touches me how many people across the country were praying for me when I went through my struggle."

For Way, Relay means "everyone pulling together to help people who are going through their journeys and especially those who are beginning the journey."
