Sumter man killed in Clarendon wreck

A 56-year-old Sumter man was killed Thursday morning in a two-car wreck at the interseciton of Barrineau and Salem roads. Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuel said an autopsy of Gerold Walton Garner is being performed today at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. The S.C. Highway Patrol reported Friday that the wreck happened about 10:34 a.m. Thursday when a 2005 Chevrolet SUV was traveling southbound on Barrineau Road, disregarded a stop sign and hit a 2005 Chevrolet four-door vehicle, which was traveling east on Salem Road. The SUV hit the car on its driver's side. Both drivers weretaken to McLeod Health Clarendon for injuries, but Garner, the driver of the SUV, was declared dead at the hospital. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, according to the Highway Patrol. The wreck is still under investigation at this time.
