Izona Roberts

Izona Roberts, widow of Melvin Roberts, died Saturday, June 25, 2016, at Family Residential Care Home in Sumter. Born May 20, 1921, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Alonzo Gordon and Rebecca Seymour. She attended Clarendon County public schools. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her savior and joined Mulberry Baptist Church. She relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and worked in the medical field as a nurse, until her retirement. In the late 1960s, she returned to Sumter. She was affectionately called "DeeDee" by family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother and extremely devoted to her family. Survivors include a daughter, Mable Miles Adams of Chapin; a son, McArthur Roberts Sr. (Jackie) of Philadelphia; two loving grandchildren, Hope Miles Guess (Kevin) of Columbia and Josef "Lamont" Buford (Brandy) of Mount Pleasant; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jomir L. Buford, Josef L. Buford II, Jahlil L. Buford, Andon T. Robinson, Jaelyn D. Buford, Joshua L. Buford, McArthur Roberts III, Markelle Roberts, Ikeem Singleton and Keira Guess. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her nine siblings; and a grandson, McArthur Roberts Jr. (Lacretia), that she raised as her own. She also leaves behind a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who are deeply grieved by her passing. Memorial services were held Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Salem Chapel and Heritage Center, 101 S. Salem Ave. in Sumter.
