George Gardner Wilkes Jr., husband of Royetta "Roy" Brown Wilkes, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2016, at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange, Georgia. Born Dec. 5, 1927, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he was a son of the late George Gardner Wilkes Sr. and Irene Sowar Wilkes. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a graduate of Louisiana State University and was a professional landscape architect in private practice, licensed in Louisiana, Georgia and Virginia. He also worked for the Veterans Administration in Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. He was a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects; the Presbyterian Church (USA), where he served as a ruling elder; the Yaarab Shrine Temple of Atlanta; and the Boy Scouts of America, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and served as scout master. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ted Wilkes Sr.; and a sister, Barbara W. Brown. Survivors besides his wife of 39 years include a son, the Rev. Dr. George Gardner Wilkes III (Jerri) of Manning; a daughter, Rebecca Wilkes Yarbrough (Dwight) of Fairfax, Virginia; four grandchildren, Kathryn Whitney (Teddy), Sara Yarbrough and James Gardner Yarbrough, all of Virginia, and Laura Wilkes of the College of Charleston; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy B. Mercer (Jim) of Vidor, Texas, Myrtle B. Muehlenbeck (Tom) of Shady Shores, Texas, and Jean B. Klink (Bill) of Cabot, Arkansas; a special niece and nephew, Ted Jr. and Terri Wilkes, both of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held March 5, 2016, in Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of George to West Georgia Hospice, 1510 Vernon Road, LaGrange, GA 30240.
