State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman visited two Clarendon School District 3 schools Thursday.

She visited first with students at Walker-Gamble Elementary School in New Zion, accompanied by Principal Sheila Floyd, Assistant Principal Tamara Alston and Clarendon School District 3 Superintendent Dr. Connie Dennis. She visited the school's media center, a music class and several classes in each grade from K4 through fifth.

"Over the next four years, obviously I want to get to as many schools as I can," Spearman said. "My goal is to see all of the schools. This week, I wanted to come view some schools in the Pee Dee region of our state."

Spearman said South Carolina has 82 school districts with more than 1,200 schools overall. She said Clarendon 3 is doing "great things with a lot of challenges."

"When you have those types of challenges, it can be hard to recruit and retain teachers, but Clarendon 3 is doing well," Spearman said.
