A 20-year-old Manning man charged with assaulting a sheriff’s deputy during an attempted arrest has been granted a $30,000 surety bond on two separate charges. Michael Neshell Prince is still at the Clarendon County Detention Center, according to the Clarendon Public Court Index, online records maintained by the Clarendon County Clerk of Court’s Office and other local law enforcement agencies. Prince was arrested about 2:30 p.m. May 13 at Westwood Apartments on Paxville Highway after authorities were alerted to four men allegedly loitering in the complex’s parking lot. “Dispatch alerted us that they weren’t supposed to be there,” said Capt. Sean Briley. “Upon our arrival, we saw the four men, and one of them took a bag of suspected marijuana out of his pants and stuck it in his mouth and started running.” Sgt. Matthew Stone and Briley chased the suspect, who then allegedly hit Stone in the face. “We did not have to use a TASER on the suspect to detain him,” Briley said. Stone was treated at Clarendon Memorial Hospital for a laceration to his forehead, Briley said. “I think the hospital was able to glue it shut,” Briley said. “They used the stitches that aren’t really stitches.” Sheriff Randy Garrett said he’s glad the situation wasn’t “much worse.” “Deputy Stone used only the force necessary to take the suspect into custody,” Garrett said. “I’m glad that he will be OK and that this situation didn’t turn out worse than it did.” Briley said Prince is charged with destruction of evidence and resisting arrest wih assault on an officer.
