A 41-year-old Alcolu man was arrested about 12:55 p.m. March 22 at a store in the 2000 block of Paxville Highway in Manning and charged with shoplifting after police viewed surveillance video showing the suspect allegedly attempting to take about $519 worth of merchandise without paying for it. According to reports, video shows Micheal Calvin, 41, of 1148 Pinecrest St. in Alcolu, exiting a red 2000 Ford Ranger alone in the parking lot, and then entering the store to select merchandise and placing it in a gray storage tote, closing the lid and sealing it shut. Reports indicate Calvin allegedly took two nine-inch Phillips DVD players valued at $89.88 each; a seven-inch Phillips DVd player valued at $64.88; a seven-inch Sylvania DVD player valued at $49.88; two 10-inch Sylvania DVd players valued at $108 each; and the storage tote itself, which was valued at $7.93. Employees with the store admitted to police that Calvin did not push the merchandise out of the store in the tote, but police found that he did not have the financial means to pay for the items.
