CMH Childbirth Classes

The Women’s and Infants’ Services Team of Clarendon Health System announces the following childbirth classes, which began Oct. 7 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. All classes are taught by experienced nurses of the Women’s and Infant’s team and breastfeeding classes are certified by certified lactation counselors. These classes are free and open to the public, though class size may be limited. These classes are recommended by the 28th week of pregnancy. To register, call Johanna Wilson at (803) 435-3231.

Childbirth 101 – 6:30-8:30 p.m., first Tuesday of each month in the in-service classroom at the hospital near the cafeteria. This is for first-time moms and their support people; also serves as a refresher course for experienced parents. Class is limited to eight couples. Registration is required. Topics will include signs of labor; stages of labor; comfort measures; pain management; and “The Golden Hour” with your newborn.

Breastfeeding basics – 6:30-8:30 p.m., second Tuesday of each month in the in-service classroom near the cafeteria. This is for moms-to-be who are interested in breastfeeding. Class size is limited to 10. Highlights will include the importance of skin-to-skin contact; recognizing hunger cues; proper latch technique; and milk storage.

New beginnings – 6:30-8:30 p.m., third Tuesday of each month in the in-service classroom near the cafeteria. This is for first-time parents. Class size is limited to eight couples. Topics will include the postpartum period and basic newborn care, which will highlight feeding cues, swaddling, bathing, cord care, skin care, comforting and more.
