County officials: 180 properties misidentifying as 'primary residences'

Clarendon County officials said Tuesday that a partnership with a Charlotte-based company has uncovered 180 properties on the county's tax rolls that are incorrectly identified as the owners' primary residences. "This is a project that we have been working on for the past year," said Clarendon County Administrator David Epperson. "This has really been a problem throughout the state of South Carolina where you have property owners with homes in more than one location, and they're claiming both homes as primary residences." Homes claimed as primary residences carry a tax-assessed value of 4 percent. Second homes that are not recognized as primary residences carry a 6 percent tax-assessed value, Epperson said. "The difference adds up," he said. He said owners of the 180 properties in question will be getting letters soon. He said the properties are spread throughout the county. "Seventy are in District 1, 92 are in District 2 and 22 are in District 3," Epperson said. See Thursday's Manning Times for more.
