Clarendon County native awarded Presidential Citation by state NAACP

The late Willie J. Nelson, a native of Clarendon County, was presented the Presidential Citation from the South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP recently. The award was presented posthumously at the organization’s annual Freedom Fund Celebration held June 13 in Columbia. “Nelson is being honored for his human rights advocacy,” according to a release from the NAACP. “He was born in Clarendon County and witnessed firsthand the injustice against people of color. However, he was more than just a witness. He used his resources to solve the plight of black people.
