Historical Society visits Hartsville for annual tour

The Clarendon County Historical Society took on Hartsville for its annual tour this year, traveling to the small city on May 15. Places visited included First Baptist Church, John L. Hart Cottage, Hartsville Museum, Hartsville Center Theater Building, a guided bus tour of Coker College, the home of Dr. and Mrs. James Morphis for a picnic lunch, the Kalmia Gardens, the Thomas E. Hart House and the Jacob Kelley House. Special stops on the way home included the Cotton and Veterans museums in Bishopville and Salem Black River Presbyterian Church.
Despite bad weather on the way, Hartsville - a small town with a big heart - gave the group a warm welcome.
"It was a wonderful tour with lots of stories to tell as a result," said Clarendon County Archives Director Nancy Cave.
          Led by tour planner and director Marie Land, tour participants included Kathryn Ard, Mary Blackwell, Jack Bomar, Monique Bomar,. June Brailsford, Helen Brailsford, Carolyn Brewer, Welborn Brewer, Nancy Cave, Lib Cherry, Greg Chiappetta, Peggy Chiapetta, Freddie Lynn Crymes, Grace Elson, Nannette Frye, Tom Honea, Ginny Honea, Mary Alice Ipock, Sally Jones, Kay Kirkpatrick, Mildred Palicka, Sandy Powell, Jean Prothro, Jim Queen, Mary Queen, Janice Richburg, Ray Richburg, Rodney Richburg, Jerry Robertson, Margaret Robertson, Anne Sauls, Sheila Schmidt, Jack Shandor, Julie Speer, Carrie Trebil and Dick Watkins.
