Progress: Sumter Beauty College

Faye H. Smith attended Sumter Beauty College several years before she became its new owner and head instructor.

She graduated from SBC in 1969 while Jo Ann Huggins was still the owner, and eventually attended Clemson University to gain her instructor’s license. But she wasn’t done with her training, the Timmonsville native said.

In fact, she went on to Roy Peters Color Academy, becoming a color specialist, before she ultimately purchased the college in 1975.

“We hold State Board-approved classes for license renewal for registered cosmetologists, along with the classes where students work toward their licenses,” Smith said. “We also offer continuing education units in trends, techniques and other related material.”

Smith holds memberships with the National Cosmetologist Association (17 years); the Look Good, Feel Better Program (11 years); and the South Carolina Association of Cosmetology Schools (17 years).

She was named cosmetologist of the year in 1987, and served as vice-president of SCACS from 1995-97 and president from 1997-99. She became a national certified comsmetology examiner in 1998.

Her school was awarded School of the Year in 2004, and again in 2008. That same year, Smith was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Cosmetologists.
