State Department of Natural Resources Capt. Robert McCullough said Wednesday morning that two men who died of an apparent drowning on Tuesday afternoon near the 102 exit on Interstate 95 near Summerton were "simply swimming."
Josh Owens, 19, of Eastover, and Timothy Leon Dixon, 21, of Sumter, died at the scene.
"All we know is that they were swimming in that little area off the sandbar," McCullough said.
Clarendon County Deputy Coroner Bucky Mock said Wednesday morning that he saw "no evidence of any alcohol in use," but said that a toxicology report was being completed along with the autopsy of the young men. Mock said a third swimmer with the young men made the call to 911 about 4 p.m. Monday.
