Red Cross offers tips for safe Memorial Day weekend

SUMTER - The American Red Cross is offering a few reminders to make this Memorial Day weekend a safe one. "With so many people hitting the roads or spending time around friends and family this weekend, now is a good time to think about safety," said Sandhills Chapter Executive Director Nancy Cataldo. "We want everyone to enjoy the holiday weekend and be safe while doing it." "With more people on the roads, it's important to pay attention while driving," Cataldo said. "Make sure you are well-rested and alert before you head out, use your seat belts, observe speed limits and follow the rules of the road. If you plan on drinking alcohol, designate a driver who won't drink." Other tips include avoiding distractions, especially cell phones; not texting while driving; keeping a safe distance between you and other vehicles; making frequent stops for rest when you feel tired; cleaning your vehicle's lights and windows to help you see, especially at night; turning your headlights on as dusk approaches, or during inclement weather; using caution in work zones; paying attention to weather forecasts for your destination; not letting your vehicle's gas tank get too low; carrying a disaster supplies kit in your trunk; and letting someone know your destination, your route and when you expect to arrive so help can be sent along your predetermined route if needed.
