COVID-19 has made its way into every small community across the globe. Its reach has earned its status as a pandemic, and there is no way of knowing when its reach will stop. This has affected local businesses and independent entrepreneurs drastically, with many closing their doors. This week, The Manning Times front page featured the names of small businesses throughout our county that can only survive with community support. The overarching message? We are all essential.
Why shopping local is important
Supporting small businesses during this time is vital to our local economy. When patrons purchase from independently-owned stores instead of nationally owned, they keep money within the local community. Local shop owners are more likely to buy from other locally owned businesses, meaning that it helps with the growth of other businesses, as well as supporting the community's tax base.
Current Situation
At the time of print, COVID-19 has already made its rounds throughout Clarendon County, forcing many businesses to close their doors entirely. Becky's Cafe in Turbeville, Garden House Floral in Manning, and many others have shut down until the state of emergency has ended. Other businesses have closed their floors and dining areas, changing to curbside pick-up and delivery only. This has taken a toll.
"As I see it right now, I estimate I'll be about 30% down for the last two weeks of the month," said Sub Station II owner Rick Richardson. "I don't really know how bad it will be, only time will tell."
This uncertainty of how bad and how long the COVID-19 panic will last causes unease in many small business owners. They are unsure of how and when to operate, and if that next customer will even walk into their shop or restaurant.
How to support local businesses
There are several ways that patrons can support small businesses during this time.
Overall, now is a time for the Clarendon community to come together as one in the face of a national dilemma. Stay vigilant and healthy, and do not forget to shop local. We are all essential.
