Game of the Week: East Clarendon overpowers Hardeeville 36-7 in home opener
East Clarendon High School secured a 36-7 victory over Hardeeville High School in their first home game of the season, despite challenging weather conditions. The game got off to a slow start, with the Wolverines struggling offensively in the first half due to penalties and turnovers caused by the rain. However, their defense dominated, intercepting four passes, including two from Braylon Brown, and consistently pressuring Hardeeville’s offense.
The Wolverines found their rhythm after halftime, pulling away with several key plays, including a 55-yard touchdown run by quarterback Takoda Cornelius. The defense continued to shine, forcing multiple turnovers and preventing Hardeeville from adding to their lone touchdown, which came on a kick return. East Clarendon’s ground game proved strong, as they rushed for 272 yards, with Cornelius and Jay Webb leading the way.
East Clarendon’s next game presents a unique challenge as they face Lakewood, a team two classifications higher, during their homecoming event. Head coach Larry Cornelius looks forward to the matchup, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and improving ahead of region play.
Laurence Manning Academy overwhelmed by Northwood Academy
In Friday’s league game, the Northwood Academy Chargers (Charleston, SC) football team triumphed over the visiting Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats (Manning, SC), by a tally of 42-6.
In their next game, the Chargers battle the Ben Lippen Falcons (Columbia, SC) in a non-league game, on Friday, September 20. Northwood Academy will attempt to better on its 5-0 season record.
The Swampcats (2-1) will now prepare for their game against Wilson Hall (Sumter, SC). The Barons enter the non-league game with a 3-0 record. In their last game, Wilson Hall overwhelmed Ben Lippen (Columbia, SC), 21-7, in a non-league game.
East Clarendon defeats Manning 6-1 in tennis matchup
The East Clarendon Lady Wolverines triumphed over Manning in a tennis match on Thursday, securing a 6-1 victory.
In doubles play, East Clarendon dominated. The duo of Addie and Ann Grace Knowlton defeated Hana and Jania Scammell 8-1 in a competitive matchup between two sets of sisters. Jordan Floyd and Maggie Epperson also earned a hard-fought victory, taking down Autumn Grigg and Linda Strickland 7-5, 6-2.
In singles competition, Addie Knowlton topped H. Scammell 6-1, 6-0, while Anne Grace Knowlton won 6-3, 6-0 against Bridget McCabe. Catherine Fleming bested J. Scammell 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match, and Kyla Smith earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tori McCabe. Manning’s only win came from Mary Ester McCabe, who edged out Ally Coker in a tiebreaker at No. 5 singles, 6-6 (6-8), 0-6.
East Clarendon volleyball starts region play with back-to-back wins Over Lake City and Manning
The East Clarendon volleyball team opened their region play with two decisive victories, starting with a 3-1 win over Lake City on Tuesday, followed by a sweep of Manning on Thursday.
In the match against Lake City, the Lady Wolverines dropped the first set 25-18 but rebounded with three straight wins, securing the next sets 25-21, 25-21, and 25-18 to take the match. Megan Brown led the offense with 14 kills, while Bailey Hicks added seven. Alyssah Driggers and Laiklyn Gaskins contributed three kills each. Sophie Brown tallied 11 assists, and Jalynn Odom chipped in with seven assists.
Against Manning, East Clarendon dominated with a clean sweep. They started with a 25-18 win in the first set and surged ahead in the second, winning 25-5. Manning fought back in the third set, but the Lady Wolverines closed it out 25-20 to seal the match.
Sophie Brown led the team’s service attack with six aces, while Megan Brown, Odom, and Driggers each added three. Megan Brown also contributed 12 kills, with Driggers adding four and Hicks three. Odom led with 15 assists, while Sophie Brown added nine. On defense, Aybree Frye was a standout with 22 serve receives and five digs.
