Samuel "Sammy" Edward Plowden

Samuel “Sammy” Edward Plowden, 87, husband of Annie “Ann” Elizabeth Mahoney Plowden, died Sunday, November 5, 2023.

Born March 28, 1936, in Manning, he was a son of the late David Calvin Plowden, Jr. and the late Hattie Wheeler Plowden. Sammy was a 1947 graduate of Wilson Primary School, a 1954 graduate of Manning High School, where he was a member of the football team, a 1958 graduate of Clemson College (University) where he majored in Horticulture. He was a US Army veteran where he served as a helicopter pilot from 1958 in Pittsburgh until he was honorably discharged in 1961. He returned to Manning and began a career at Manning Tractor Company where he was a salesman and co-owner, selling John Deere equipment for 45 years. Sammy was a founding member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Trustee. As a business professional, he served as chair of the Manning Jaycees, was past president of the Board for Laurence Manning Academy, and he was a founding member of the Lord Clarendon Cotillion.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years of Manning; two sons, Samuel Edward Plowden, Jr. (Nancy) of Charleston and John Richard Plowden (Becky) of Kingstree; a daughter, Susanne Plowden Johnson (Mickey) of Manning; six grandchildren, Seth Elliott Plowden (Mikayla), Spencer Edward Plowden, John Coker Plowden (Savannah), Samuel Richard Plowden, Lauren Johnson Rogers (Jack) and Blanding Galloway Johnson (Caroline); five great grandchildren, Wilson Coker Plowden, Jackson Hall Rogers II, Oliver Edward Plowden, Harper Rose Johnson and Eleanor Ann Plowden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Plowden Windham; and a brother, David Calvin Plowden III.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at New Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Daniel B. Miller officiating. Burial followed at Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Coker Plowden, Sam Plowden, Seth Plowden, Spencer Plowden, Bland Johnson and Jack Rogers. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present Elders, Deacons and Trustees of New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

The family received friends at the residence, 507 Woodland Drive, Manning.
